Selected installation views, THE ROPING ROOM (2014)
mixed-media installation: printed archival stereographic photographs, animated archival stereographic photographs, CRT monitors
THE ROPING ROOM is an exploration in the creation of narrative History and histories through the triangulation of narrative forms (personal, descriptive, and landscape). Dominant narratives in the piece trace multiple modes of production and refinement in terms of agriculture, institution, and the body. Both within the animated stereographic images and through relationships between the pieces, I seek to critique the ever-present colonial model of vision and mastery through the very mechanism of its representation. In so doing, I hope to expose representation as manipulation and raise questions about the present both as “creator of” and “created by” History.
Stereographic images acquired from the Keystone-Mast Collection at UCR/California Museum of Photography.
